Optimizing inflight data flows to minimize roaming costs

KLM’s in-flight tablet apps provide cabin crew with real-time flight data and passenger info, improving customer service and operational efficiency. However, the constant stream of data led to high roaming costs.

To address this, KLM asked us to enhance their ePIL (electronic Passenger Information List) and Ebriefer (a pilot application for aircraft refueling, weather updates, and more) iPad apps. We developed a centralized, always-on filtering solution that intelligently blocks unnecessary data traffic—significantly reducing mobile network usage and drastically cutting operational costs across KLM’s global fleet.

Smarter data, lower costs

At the heart of the solution is a Cisco-based internet filter, positioned in KLM’s data center. Incoming traffic from the airline’s internet provider is routed through the filter, which allows only relevant data from the ePIL and Ebriefer apps to pass through. Everything else is automatically blocked.

In addition to filtering, the system reroutes passenger data via a secure internet connection instead of through roaming networks. The result is instant savings and greater control over data flow.

Since rollout, the new solution has been deployed fleet-wide and proven its value in day-to-day operations. It brings both technical refinement and tangible cost reductions to every flight.
